The Salt Gate is a nearly forgotten part of the city fortifications of České Budějovice. You can find it to the west of the square, at the end of Radniční Street toward the confluence of the Malše and the Vltava. Looking at it, most visitors probably do not even think it is a remnant of the original city fortifications. The building style of the gate is difficult to classify, but it may have been established by Ottokar II himself in connection with his order to provide access to the water. The main fortification boom occurred in the 14th century. However, the walls lost their importance later on, and the Salt Gate itself was rebuilt several times; its present-day appearance is more that of a two-story house with a passageway with a segmented vault. The gate is a two-story building on a square footprint, topped with a low tented roof and featuring a passageway with a segmented vault.
