The South Bohemian Museum is among the most important cultural institutions in south Bohemia. It is housed in a monumental building in Dukelská Street in České Budějovice. The museum exhibitions focus on the south Bohemian region, mapping its history, culture and vernacular art. In addition to permanent exhibits, the museum organizes periodic short-term themed exhibitions, lectures, concerts and other cultural and educational programs, and offers professional advice for the public and partner institutions. The monumental building constructed in 1899-1901 in an historicizing Neo-Renaissance style was opened in 1903. The museum was a venue for lectures by explorer Dr. Emil Holub, who used his honorarium of 400 florins to finance his planned trips to Africa. On the occasion, he also donated his collection of natural objects, ethnographic material and a copy of his complete works to the museum.
The general renovation of the main building in 2012-2014 gave the museum a new facade, modified the interiors, established wheelchair accessibility and a new entrance from Senovážné Square. The museum is open year-round.
