The majestic České Budějovice Town Hall building is located on Přemysl Otakar II Square, and is a part of the urban heritage reserve. Originally a Renaissance structure, it was built in the mid-16th century. Its formal present-day appearance dates to the Baroque years of 1727-30 and was designed by Schwarzenberg master builder Antonín E. Martinelli.

Its monumental facade is enhanced by three spires, the central one being the tallest and containing a carillon made in 1995. The Town Hall boasts four allegoric statues on the parapet, representing the civic virtues of Justice, Bravery, Wisdom and Caution. They were made by the local sculptor J. Dietrich. Another attraction is the iron strip embedded in the corner pillar of the Town Hall. Its length is one Viennese ell (77 cm), and it was used for over a century as a measure for fabric sales during local markets.

The courtyard contains a statue of a prominent personality of the city’s history – the politician August Zátka. The interior of the Town Hall is also worth a visit. It features the original of the Samson statue from the fountain on the square, original statues of the virtues from the Town Hall parapet, and a large tapestry by painter Cyril Bouda. The lookout terrace on the building roof commands an impressive view of the city. The most opulent room of the Town Hall is the ceremonial hall with a vaulted ceiling decorated with a fresco from 1730 depicting the Judgment of Solomon.

České Budějovice Town Hall is currently one of the most interesting buildings in the country. Do not miss the opportunity to see it with a guide, which will be an unforgettable experience from your visit to České Budějovice. Book tours through the Tourist Information Centre.
