Fun on your doorstep – why head to České Budějovice for your holidays

Why visit South Bohemia, and Budějce in particular?

Take a look at 5 reasons that might convince you:

South Bohemia is beautiful, full of sights and entertainment. From České Budějovice – known locally simply as Budějce – it’s just a short trip to places you’ve always wanted to see, or should want to see.

1. Hluboká Castle (11 km) - the white pearl of the south, where many fairy tales were set, is open even in winter. The winter tour isn’t too long and should be enjoyable for children too, as it takes you through the private rooms of the castle’s former owners. Right next door is the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery, and not far from the castle is Hluboká Zoo, which is sure to delight both children and adults. Events are held here regularly, and new baby animals arrive in the spring. Next to the zoo, you’ll find the Fairytale Underground.

2. Holašovice (18 km) – this village near České Budějovice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is certainly worth a visit; take a stroll around the village green, which is surrounded by well-preserved houses.

3. Český Krumlov (25 km) – this town, with its world-famous castle and chateau, is usually teeming with tourists, but it’s better in winter and spring. We therefore recommend taking advantage of this time of year to enjoy the atmosphere of this UNESCO-listed town.

4. Lipno nad Vltavou (65 km) – the biggest attractions are the Treetop Walkway, the local ski slopes and, when it’s really freezing, the longest ice rink. Skating on the frozen lake, which stretches for several kilometres, and on the groomed trails is an unforgettable experience.

5. České Budějovice itself – the town serves as a great base, but it also has plenty to offer. For children, there are several children’s entertainment centres in the city, as well as two multiplex cinemas; you can relax at the swimming complex with its new hot tub, sauna, diving tower and water slide. Hockey fans should experience the atmosphere of the most visited stadium in Europe (in the second-highest European leagues); for a bit of sightseeing, you can head to the Budvar brewery, the observatory or the local museums.

And don’t say there are only 5 activities – near Budějovice, for example, there’s also Třeboň, Týn nad Vltavou with its museum of moldavites and puppets, Bechyně, Tábor with its chocolate museum, and more.
